ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Software Developer, you will be part of a dynamic team, based in the JRC campus in Ispra (Italy). The JRC campus is hosting a vibrant community of approximately 2.500 top-notch researchers, engineers and senior scientists, eager to resolve current and future challenges related to energy, nuclear safety, climate change and more.


SCOPE

An important requirement for policy support and applied research project activities carried out by the JRC for the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is the ability to develop custom-built web-based applications that can store, process and exchange scientific data, documents and other information with large communities of authorized external users. The two main communities of users are the scientific experts participating in the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) and the scientists or administrators participating in the fisheries data collection process under the remit of the EU Data Collection Framework Regulation.


OBJECTIVES

The software to be developed and enhanced includes data checking and validation tools, applications to store data into databases, and web user interfaces.

The new software applications and functionalities that, once they become operational, they must be maintained. As a Software Developer, you will need to provide sufficient level of communication within the JRC, in order to ensure a fully transparent and efficient team activity.

The following results are expected:

  • Development and testing of software tools
  • Presentation of status reports on a systematic basis 


DESCRIPTION OF TASKS

  • Maintain and improve the Java upload tools used to collect and store in the database the data provided by the EU Member States 
  • Maintain and improve the data validation tools used to test the format of the data provided by EU Member States 
  • Maintain and improve the Data Transmission Monitoring (DVM) tool, used by EU Member States and DG MARE.
  • Develop new tools related to the Data Collection Framework regulation, according to needs
  • Provide support to IT infrastructure-related security assessments and reporting


MUST-HAVEs

  • Experience in developing web applications with friendly UI
  • Experience with Java/J2EE
  • Experience with Javascript
  • Experience with design, testing and deployment 
  • Excellent command of English 
  • University degree plus minimum 3 years of working experience


GOOD-TO-HAVEs

  • Experience with AJAX, Java Script, XML
  • Knowledge of RDBS and SQL (experience with PostgreSQL) is a plus
  • Experience with ETL (Extract Transform and Load) frameworks
  • Knowledge of a second EU language
